Project Description.

This was a project I did for an Asset Creation Module for my Masters at University. We were tasked to recreate something from real life as a 3D model with realistic textures and accuate modelling. I chose to recreate a rocking horse by the Stevenson Brothers.

This section will talk about the softwares I used in each section of this workflow.

To start, I used Maya to model the entire of the base, and block out the horse shape. Because all of the base was hard surface modelling it was easy to model all of it in Maya, but because the horse is very realistic, I took it into Zbrush to sculpt in the extra detail and features.

Once the horse was sculpted, I went back into Maya and modelled all of the accessories. I also unwrapped the whole model in Maya to be taken into Substance later.

I then took everything into Substance Painter. I wanted the horse to look a little bit aged, and so tried to fade out a lot of the colour - predominantly in the horse. The base, saddle and accessories were simple textures that I added more detail into.

The horse had to be fully hand painted, and so after laying down a light grey wood material as a base, I went in and added all of the colouring by hand. Also since I had to make it look worn down I had to fade out a lot of the detail after it was in.

Finally, I moved into 3ds max to finish everything off. I used 3ds because I wanted to render using Vray and also use the Vray hair simulation, because I find it easier to use than Maya. I added in the room that the horse is situated in, and created a worn down texture for the walls and floors. I also added in my light set up. I wanted to use volumetric lights for the scene, so used a sun light for this with some fog, and also animated it to go from day time to night time. I also added in 3 other lights to better light the scene.

The downside to using volemtric lights and a hair simulation is that the render times became very long for it to not be full of noise.
